While everyone is very careful about one's passport one also needs to prepare in case of loss Our suggestions
- keep a photocopy in every piece of luggage
- a copy on your person
- a photo in our cell phone
- email a copy to yourself, this can be forwarded to your Consulate if needed
I once misplaced mine and the US consulate in Sri Lanka wanted a copy ( which I did not have) even though it could have verified my credentials in other ways!
Also if you are a US citizen you can get a Passport card - credit card size for $30. Very useful to have one while travelling
